An Easy and Practical Way to Bring Your Core Values Alive
In my quest to take core values from the imaginary to the reality, I want to give an easy, practical way to bring your core values alive inside of your organization.
All too often, we focus our performance reviews on things to improve on and performance against set targets. But what about culture fit? What about core values? If your core values are truly important in your company, then you better start helping your people understand how they are doing in terms of living your core values.
The companies I know who really get this will put up to a 50% weighting on core values. That’s right – 50% of an employee’s performance is judged by their ability to live the company score values.
Do you think the employees take their core values seriously?
Here is a simple way to do it.
Before a review, have the employee’s team members rank them on a scale of 1-10 on how they live each core value. 9-10 is a promoter – they are a raving fan in the way they live the core value; 7-8 is a neutral – they are OK/average; and 1-6 is a detractor – they really don’t fit with this core value and display it in their actions.
If they are ranked a 9-10, ask, Why?
If they are ranked a 1-6 or 7-8, ask, what can they do to improve?
Keep this confidential of course, but it is a great way to get some comprehensive feedback vs just your own opinion.
Note: I adapted this measurement system from the Net Promoter system, which we use to measure our customer service at Nurse Next Door.
