What is John’s purpose in life? To create systemic change in our society. It is through his company,
Nurse Next Door, that he has embarked on this purpose. Founded in 2001 and based on personal
experiences, Nurse Next Door has become a world-class healthcare brand in North America. John
and his partner, Ken, have completely changed the way that seniors are cared for throughout North
America. Rated as the # 1 Place to Work in British Columbia by B.C Business, one of the top places to work in Canada by the Globe & Mail, and one of the top 20 most innovative companies by BC Business, Nurse Next Door has achieved this by building an amazing culture.
Prior to Nurse Next Door, John launched and co-founded a number of early-stage, hi-tech companies,
but he left this lucrative industry in search of something more meaningful. After taking significant time
off, John re-entered the business world with a mission: to create a leading brand in the healthcare
industry that would build upon the foundation of core purpose, core values and the envisioned future.
John holds a BS in Hotel Administration (Major in Finance) from Cornell University and a master’s in
Entrepreneurship from MIT. He has been featured in numerous media outlets, including the Globe
and Mail, Fortune Small Business, the National Post, CBC and MSN. He is a regular keynote speaker
and has been invited to speak throughout North America, including at prestigious universities, such as
Cornell University and MIT.
John lives in Vancouver with his wife, Gayla, and daughter, Daisy. He co-founded the DeHart Foundation, which is currently building a school in Emorijoi, Kenya. His passions include trail running on any mountain, windsurfing, going to the beach and reading (philosophy and classic literature are his favourite subjects).
John is currently teaching a session at MIT titled: “Unleash the Power of Vision in Your Business”. John DeHart, an EMP alumnus and EO Vancouver member, will introduce you to the secret to unleashing greatness in yourself and your business. This fundamental business foundation will outlast strategy, your next great best practice and all of your people.
This is not a mission statement; not empty words that will make your board feel that you’re doing something nice (other than making money). No, it is a platform that will help you build and deliver a world-class culture and topnotch brand. Many call this powerful foundation “vision,” and it includes these three components:
• core values
• core purpose, and
• painted picture
John will not only introduce these three vital components, but he will also give you simple strategies
on how to bring them alive within your organization. It started out as a simple idea in a coffee shop,
and now, John’s company, Nurse Next Door Professional Home Care Services, has become the
fastest-growing and most recognizable homecare company in Canada. Learn how John and his
partner Ken overcame the challenges of creating a hyper-growth company to become a company that
has developed into one of the most admired brands in their industry, has been awarded the distinction
of Top 10 employer for two years running, garnered immense media attention and earned them
various other awards (including Top 40 under 40 Leaders in British Columbia, Canada, as well as
Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award (Emerging Entrepreneur, Pacific Region, 2006). If
John could do it, so can you— it just takes a little vision!

Dear John,
As a creative entrepreneur, you must be at all time thinking of new ways to extend the scope of your health care business. Thanks to the development of the internet technology, there is an innovative way of realizing care-taking services.
We are a small Vancouver based technology company offering solutions of high-tech internet applications. We have a device called “IOT communicator” that can monitor the well-being of an elderly person living alone and send his/her activities to a website automatically. The caretakers, nurses or relatives can reveal the status easily by going to this site anywhere in the world.
By providing this as one of the services to your clients, you broaden your customer base. We are happy to modify our product and tailor-design you any application you can think of. The business opportunities are limited only by your imagination. We also have a “MEATS” system that can trace your mobile employees’ attendance in real-time.
Please take a look of our website for details of the product and services we offered:-

We locate at Coquitlam, BC and are happy to visit your office at any time to show how our product works. Please contact us today to arrange a business presentation.

I had the aha moment when I saw your ad on Face book “home care franchise” and I said to myself this man has to be a pure genius knowing that everyone like funeral home will need at some point this type of care service – continuous supply of customers – This is one of the brightest idea I have seen / heard in years
Hi John
Just seen one of your cars in West Vancouver……..” We are always looking for staff”….excellent.
As an immigrant myself I was amazed at how little Prior Learning and Recognition (PLAR) was available in the Care sector. So I bought the rights for an on line system I used in my own care businesses in UK.
Maybe you would take a look at the product and its range of applications, particularly this one:

Dear Mr. DeHart
I am writing in regards to your Edmonton SW location.I am sending this to your blog because I can’t find any other way to contact you.
I attended a job fair at this location in July 2010. This meeting went very well for all who attended and I walked away looking forward to working with your organization. I have worked with seniors before and I am also a driver for my 92 year old father-in-law.
I returned the following week with a copy of my social insurance card, driver’s license, TB test results and my Criminal Record Check. I hadn’t completed the record check because I was uncertain how Nurse Next Door completed the one box for “who requested the report”.
Nurse Next Door employee Tamra completed the form for me. She wrote Nurse Next Door, her name and the SW address in the box. After paying for this report, I was advised that no one else could use the report for their organization because it was filled out by Tamra for your company.
Since then, I have been offered four positions. Two that were forty minutes to drive to, one that was offered at 8:30 p.m. for 8 a.m. the next morning, and one that I agreed to. After being offered the position at 10 a.m., the next morning one hour before leaving, I was advised that I would not be needed. None of the offers were in the availability time I requested.
In August, I was sent an email asking for volunteers at Southgate Mall. I went and looked everywhere at that mall and no one was there from Nurse Next Door at the designated time. I checked with the mall management as well and they had no listing of the group being there that day.
I was sent an email to pick up my name tag. I confirmed the date I would be there but there wasn’t one for me. That was the last straw. I am very disappointed with how this organization has been run. I would like to get a refund on the money I spent on the police check.
Thank you
